- Proprietary, or proprietary garbage, refers to something that is lacking the permission to copy, distribute, study, change or improve without limitations. Most modern hardware is proprietary and thus should be avoided as much as possible. Being proprietary is similar to being under copyright, or having patents, but it is important to understand the differences to protect your freedom.
